note to self: re-read self reliance by emerson
we did an active shooter training drill at work yesterday and it was terrifying. for two hours we had this guy from a security company who used to work in homeland security and used to be a cop give us this presentation and then we did the drill and an actor came into the building with an air cap gun or whatever but it made this loud popping sound and we went on lockdown and i hid under my desk and he was banging on my editor’s door and it was scary i can’t even fucking fathom how traumatizing it must be to really be in that situation
celebs left and right are detaching/separating themselves from social media for the sake of their mental health and i honestly might follow suit
new year’s was a dream
this was an amazing new year’s weekend. i usually spend new year’s eve really anxious and reflecting on the past year and getting overwhelmed and nervous and uncomfortable and high strung and worked up. but this year i was having none of that. being with jake for the past couple days helped. really focused on living in the moment. both at the concert on friday and at the restaurant on new year’s eve. i found that i was so much happier when i lived in the moment rather than trying to snapchat it or record it in some way.
things i want to keep in mind as i go into the new year:
—things/items do not make you happy. declutter your space and you will declutter your mind. implement the konmari style and only keep objects that spark joy. detach from useless, trivial things and throw them away. make room for new, better things. visualize and manifest what you want.
—visualize and manifest the life you want. cultivate. seek more. learn more. grow.
—your phone is a time thief. get into the habit of monitoring your time spent on the black mirror.
—live in the moment more often. dwelling on the past and thinking about the future removes you from the present. stop worrying about upcoming events or deadlines. be present. be here now.
—allow the others around you to be a source of happiness, release, comfort, light. do not let negativity bog you down.
—no more overly stressing myself out about work. less anxiety in 2019. the work will get done regardless and worrying about it removes me from the present and makes me tense. they’re not paying me enough to justify disturbing my mental state/health.
—allow yourself to do things you enjoy more often. immerse yourself in a good book and watch more netflix. there are way too many great shows and movies and documentaries that need watching, and so little time.
—verbalize/vocalize how much you care about the people in your life more often. show gratitude in actionable ways.
—keep looking forward. “don’t look back, you’re not going that way.” this will constantly encourage progress.
—allow your yoga practice to seep into your daily life. focus on spreading love and kindness to others, and yourself.
—go to bed earlier and wake up earlier to give yourself more time to get things done. be more productive. learn to manage your time better.
—save more money. be more conscious of your spending. track what you’re buying. be responsible.
I was going to submit these images to a gallery show that I’m participating in but at the last minute I decided to go in a different direction. Still, I sort of liked seeing all of my animal enthusiasm in one place. Photos are from Bali, South Africa and Botswana.
